15,000 m² of wall elements, 3,200 m² of roof elements and 1,500 m³ of glue-laminated and sawn timber. These are the kind of volumes that are needed to complete Europe’s biggest wooden apartment block under construction in Vantaa, Finland.

Koskisen Houses’ factory in Finland is running three shifts to manufacture the elements. More than 300 truckloads are needed to transport the elements to the construction site. Some elements are gigantic, measuring 4x14 meters. These have been assembled on the large-element production line, which was completed last year.

“The wall elements come with windows, balcony doors, facade tiles and air-conditioning lead-throughs installed. Owing to this the only tasks left to be performed at the construction site are the installation of the elements and balconies and other subcontracting. It speeds up the project considerably,” says Project Sales Manager Vesa Saarelainen from Koskisen Houses.

The installation of the first elements of the wooden apartment block started at the construction site around mid-August. Elements are now being installed in the A section of the apartment block, but formwork and rebar installation work for the concrete vault of the next section are already ongoing. The plan is to build the apartment block in three sections.

The entire building is covered by a vast tent for protection against weather conditions. The cover and scaffolding are “smart”, i.e. they have motors which raise the cover higher as new floors are finished. The system also frees up more space around the building. The process is “waterproof” also with regard to the elements, since they are shrink-wrapped at the house factory prior to being delivered to the construction site.

Koskisen’s Managing Director Markku Koskinen visited the construction site in August and was pleased with what he saw.

“The foundations looked good and carefully made. The electrically-powered weather shielding gives a highly professional impression. Although the installation of the elements has only started, there are already plenty of Koskisen element packages on-site,” Koskinen notes.
